I was fortunate to see an advance screening of Darren Aronofsky's 'Black Swan' last night followed by a q&a with Darren and the cast, Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey and Vincent Cassel. What an incredible movie that has Oscar written all over it, shot on super 16mm gives the film a grainy, unpolished almost dated look, that adds to the suspense of the movie, a lot of hand-held shots heightened the darkness of this piece. Natalie Portman is exquisite as the prima ballerina with a paranoid side. She trained for a whole year in ballet to perfect the role and it shows -not for one second do I not believe her. I've always been a fan, but this is her year. Aronofsky has a way with women, I guess he gets them to do things other directors would have a huge problem with. Ellen Burstyn taking drugs in 'Requiem for a dream' , Marisa Tomei baring all in last year's 'The Wrestler', I won't ruin this film but the places he takes Ms. Portman, are WOW! A fantastic turn by Barbara Hersey playing Portman's mother is both chilling and moving at the same time. Nice to see her on the screen again.
Mila Kunis, best known for starring in the long running 'that 70's show' is well cast as the black swan, vying for her role. She plays with great subtlety, that leaves you questioning. All in all a fantastic thriller, superbly directed and acting, best film of the year thus far for me.
