British actress Suzannah York has died at the age of 72

British actress Susannah York has died at the age of 72 after suffering from cancer, her son has said. She appeared in film, TV and theatre during a career which began in the 1960s.
She was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in the 1969 film They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and won a Bafta for the same role.
Her son Orlando Wells told the Telegraph newspaper that she was "an absolutely fantastic mother".
"She loved nothing more than cooking a good Sunday roast and sitting around a fire of a winter's evening. In some sense, she was quite a home girl. Both Sasha [Orlando's sister] and I feel incredibly lucky to have her as a mother.''

York trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, winning the Ronson Award for most promising student, according to the Internet Movie Database.
Directed by Sydney Pollack, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? followed the contestants in a grueling dance marathon and also starred Jane…

Monday is another holiday as it is Martin Luther King Day. For a guide to to the celebrations happening around Los Angeles click here

Has anyone got anything fun planned for Burns Night? We were thinking of organising something, but perhaps there is something amazing already going on? Let us know so we can share with the Scots in the group.

This weeks newsletter is brought to you by MIKE SULLIVAN OF VOLKSWAGEN SANTA MONICA.
It's really difficult to build up a credit score when you first move to the States. VW of Santa Monica have found a loop hole and have been helping so many BRITS IN LA get vehicles. If you need a car - Buy or Lease, Joe Seymour is the guy to talk to. For those of you on a visa, the Foreign Business Professionals Plan is probably your best option but spe…

Fancy A Cuppa?

Yorkshire Tea and Little Urn are on a mission to deliver a decent brew to Brits Abroad. Do you have someone you think deserves a decent cuppa? Nominate them here .
Here is a message from the Yorkshire Tea-m

Hello from Yorkshire Tea. To all those of you who couldn’t start the day without one, always brew one when trouble’s afoot and miss a proper one when away from home, we’re here for you! This week a small team from Yorkshire Tea landed in Santa Monica with a simple plan, bring a proper brew to Brits abroad. Why? Well, on top of everyone who’s asked us to come visit, there’s some pretty hard water about which really affects the taste of your tea. Given we make a blend just for hard water it was time to do something about this, so here we are.

To help us, we’ve shipped out Little Urn, or Urnie as he’s known, our converted ice cream van come tea-sampling unit. Over the coming weeks Little Urn and his brew crew will be serving up as much free tea as they can muster to as many Br…

Get Intimate with Russell Brand

@ The Roxy Show in 2008
Fellow Brit in LA, Russell Brand is working on a documentary. This week I was lucky enough to attend his shows at the Acme Theatre, which is a small theatre on La Brea. The shows are being recorded as part of a feature documentary Russell is making about happiness. By being part of the audience you consent to being part of the film. They are not your normal stand up show, more of a look at what is going on inside Russell's head! Still very entertaining and super cheap! Our tickets were $17 which was a steal. He has just announced more shows in the same vein for next week. He will be appearing at the Improv Comedy Club on Melrose for three nights. Get your tickets quick as they are bound to sell out! I Spy The New Spidey!!! And He's A Brit!

Your first look at British actor Andrew Garfield in the Spiderman costume. other good news for Garfield, he has also made the longlist in the upcoming BAFTA awards. TWICE!!! He's up for his turn as Eduardo Saverin in David Fincher's 'The Social Network' and also for the character, Tommy in  Mark Romanek's dark and chilling 'Never Let Me Go' starring alongside Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan.  I hope he doesn't cancel himself out with the double nominations. What are your thoughts about our British Peter Parker?

Up The BLAggers - 3-0

Congrats to the BRITS IN LA's official team BLAggers United F.C. beating The Sporting belliz 3-0
last night at the Santa Monica Airfield in Santa Monica.

This was our first win and a good way to start the year out, The lads are in fine form and ready to kick some local arse this year.

Well done lads!

What to do if you are arrested in LA?

Contact the British Embassy at their website for info. : under 'HOW WE CAN HELP' and a local 'list of lawyers'.

Any person who was detained and given a further court date should get in touch with a lawyer.  A lawyer can appear for a defendant and enter a plea for any straightforward cases ie. DUI/misdemeanour.  They will have to pay lawyer fees and a fine if necessary, which the lawyer can take care of.

If the person is contesting the charges then they would have to appear to go to trial. All in all it's a very expensive process, I know people who have spent up to 20,000k for a DUI. This info is mainly for Britons on a standard tourist visa. Does anyone know what happens if you are a permanent resident? Share your advice and stories with us. - CY

Gandalf's back, Alright!!!

Thanks to good agents and managers, (Shout out to Louisa Spring) . last year I, along with quite a few other Brits in LA had the good fortune of auditioning for "The Hobbit" However, none of my friends, nor I booked it. This doesn't stop me from being super excited about it though. And now for really big news --
On the heels of Elijah Wood's recent deal to reprise his "Lord of the Rings" role as Frodo, Deadline New York reports that Andy Serkis has signed on to once again play Gollum in the two "Hobbit" films. What's more, it's looking like Ian McKellen is poised to reprise the part of Gandalf in what's being called "a major role" in the new films.

McKellen, Serkis and their cohorts, it seems, won't be the only "LOTR" faces to pop up in "The Hobbit." Cate Blanchett has already signed on to play Galadriel, Christopher Lee is in talks for Saruman, and Ian Holm is in talks for the elder Bilbo Bag…
