Editor's letter

Hi Everyone
What a week it has been for the British!
We came in close in the golf, Chris Froome won the Tour De France and I will never understand cricket but it seems we are doing rather well there too, at the moment!
A lot of you were speculating and now we finally know! Born at 4.24pm on July 22nd 2013 , but what will he be named? My money is on George...
I know not everyone is into the Royals but I really enjoy having a monarchy.
Even as a young child I would send them letters or drawings occasionally. Now I get the chance to host events celebrating them (see below)!
Thought some of you might get a kick out of this letter I received from
Princess Diana's Lady-in-Waiting.
This was in response to my letter congratulating the
Princess of Wales on the birth of her son William back in 1983!

Speaking of the birth , we will be hosting a
Summer Fete in celebration this Sunday
Sponsored by Volkswagen Santa MonicaAudi Pacific & Beltran Brito Immigration Attorneys
Sunday July 28th 3-6pm at The Palihouse West Hollywood,
with food, drink and some great games.

We are very honoured to have the lovely Summer Watson performing
for us all on Sunday.
With the voice of an angel and the body of a supermodel, stunning soprano
Summer Watson is making classical music young, fun and sexy.

Having wowed the rest of the world with her soaring vocals and undeniable elegance this charismatic Brit is now based in LA and ready to take Hollywood by storm.

Meet a Member
We ask the same 5 questions each week
to a member of Brits in LA
Meet Marina Paganucci from Buckingham
who moved to LA 5 years ago as an Executive Headhunter and now owns
her own executive search firm specializing in digital media professionals.

Was there a particular reason you chose LA ?
I was working for a global search firm at the time in Singapore and they sent me here to start a new digital media division.

What one thing do you miss from home?
Country pubs, London, small country villages and Marks & Spencers! (ok, so that’s four)

What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus the UK?
Where do I start? There is SO much different here from the UK. For starters, even though people think we speak the same language, we don’t.  Getting understood was the biggest challenge when I first got here, and sometimes still is – we have so many words that are so different: trunk v boot, trolley v cart, caster sugar v bakers sugar – I could go on.  Even asking for a ‘bottle of water’ still gets me the blank stare from someone American, something I’ve grown accustomed to!  Also, the sense of humour is so very different. This is why finding the BritsinLA community has been a godsend to me, and I love coming to Tuesday breakfast and all the other events so that I can be with people that I can have a laugh with.

Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
For sure the BritsinLA community! The other gem is the lovely hiking trails in LA. Most people just see Hollywood, Santa Monica or the bad traffic and don’t realize that just beyond the buildings, there are some amazing hikes in nature that you can go on. Also, discovering all the other ‘villages’ within LA itself like Los Feliz, Pasadena, Hancock Park and places like that. I really do believe that LA is like a cluster of villages that all make up this sprawling city.

What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move
here ?
To join a group like BritsinLA where you’ll get the support and have people to go to with questions. Although I lived in Singapore and Dubai for years as an expat before moving to LA, I can honestly say that I felt more foreign here than in Asia or the Middle East as they had far more British influences than the US.  Ironically, I thought that it would be an easier transition here because we all speak ‘English’ but I found that not to be the case.  I think if I was more aware of the fact that the US really is a foreign country and not at all similar to Britain, I would have been more prepared for it. It’s also important to learn about how different things like healthcare, employment law, etc., are here compared to Britain and to be prepared so that you’re not faced with high unexpected costs, etc. and no knowledge of what to do.

'Uplifting true-life story... that deserves

to be more widely known'

by Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter

" Nicky's Family is that rare Holocaust documentary that is largely uplifting. And it’s particularly heartwarming to note that its central figure is still around to reap his deserved accolades."

The film is about Sir Nicholas Winton and the nearly forgotten tale of his

rescue of 669 Czech and Slovak children in 1939.  Because of his efforts,

of the 300 "children" who have been found, over 5,700 descendants are now

alive.  Sir Winton, now 104 years old, has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth

II and his name has been submitted to the committee for the Nobel Peace

They are hard at work at building the grassroots/word of mouth about this

film.  Because he is a British hero, they want to engage the LA British

Now Playing – August 18, 2013

A time-twisting funhouse from the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning author of Clybourne Park and the Tony Award®-winning director of August: Osage County.

Past, present and future collide for Bee, when strange new revelations rock her seemingly normal suburban life, taking us down the rabbit hole on a wildly unforgettable ride full of hairpin plot turns, riotously shifting realities and havoc-wreaking time travel.

This bold new play will make you laugh, gasp and wonder how much control we truly have over our lives.
Masterful storyteller Norris follows up his monster Taper hit Clybourne Park with a mind-scrambling comedy that gleefully distorts our perspective while posing profound questions about the choices we make.

“It makes your head spin in all the right ways.”

Over the past three years, The Inner City Shakespeare Ensemble has engaged students in the appreciation of the wit and wisdom of “The Bard”, enriching their lives and opening their horizons with productions of Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  This year gifted students from George Washington Prep High School and Los Angeles High School and will present highlights from Twelfth Night, one of Shakespeare’s most delightful comedies.  Experience this talented troupe as Orsino speaks these classic lines, “If music be the food of love . . . Play on!”

Summer nights in L.A. are for hanging outdoors as long as you can, enjoying the great weather and good friends. Eat See Hear Movies puts together the ultimate nighttime outdoor hangout, combining popular films with live indie bands and some of the city's most famous food trucks. The Los Angeles State Historic Park screenings take advantage of the spacious park setting and views of the downtown cityscape, rolling the largest outdoor movie screen west of the Mississippi into the park for screenings of everyone's favorite movies along with live performances by up-and-coming bands. As always, a variety of the city's best food trucks will be on hand to dish out food, offering up a variety of food choices from around the world.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Sunset Boulevard" From Musical Theatre West

Hollywood noir meets Broadway razzle-dazzle in Sunset Boulevard, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical adaptation of Billy Wilder's classic film. Complemented by one of Webber's most radiant scores, Sunset Boulevard is every bit as enthralling, dark and delicious as the original black-and-white masterpiece. Sidelined by the introduction of "talkies," silent movie star Norma Desmond longs for a return to the big screen. Her neediness and cunning provide the perfect trap for down-and-out screenwriter Joe Gillis who wanders into her decaying mansion looking for a quick buck ... and gets much more in return.                                         GOOD LUCK  BLESSINGS!!

In any relationship situation you will find that what ever was a problem will begin to ease up as Mars your boss moves forward. He will be in your money area of life and that will be on hold for a week or so.

Your priority should be taking care of you in any area that requires attention. and start with what you know you can handle right now .Be aware that Mercury the planet of all communications is moving forward today!

The sun in your communication area can bring out a controlling side of you however it also favors getting a handle on any part of life where there is unfinished business. Mercury your boss moves forward today so action stations.

It’s best to keep a low profile for the rest of the month due to all the planets in your sign The sun moving into Leo next week can  bring up some old possibly unresolved issues .This is best taken care of with out hesitation . Happy Birthday.

The sun moving in to your sign next week should assist you in any part of life right now , as will Mercury going forward. .Rest and things will pick up in a positive way by the end of the month. Have a Happy Birthday.

Its time you figured out that your nature is to worry too much sometimes and so with this in mind every time you start to obsess about something you cannot control slap yourself on the wrist. Mercury is moving forward now so life gets kind of hectic.

If you have any thing you need to be working on get it done by month  end as Mercury will now assist you from this week end You should be  ready and able to deal  head on whatever it is you need to get it sorted now.

This time for all water signs is very special. It is due to a line up of very influential planets for you, especially the rest of this month. Forgive and let go of past hurts and make a decision to keep a positive outlook as this is the time for wishes to come true.

Just watch that temper if things don’t always go the way you planned life is an adventure.
and you need to remember that this too shall pass... You may be wondering what’s next for you .Be more in the moment and you will benefit from this effort.

August could be the month that life starts to work your way for a change .Only if you stop and smell the flowers of life as you tend to move through life with your head down and your eyes on the end result. The water planets are favoring you.

You will always get back what you put out and so with this in mind keep your thought on your life and where you are heading .This is time to plan a trip. This will give you a different focus that’s good for you for now.

You are at a crossroads now because of all the beneficial influences in the planets you have to make some kind of decision about your quality of life. The sooner the better as the planets are very positive currently all will be revealed in good time.

Mel Smith RIP
