Steve Sidelnyk's World Cup Blog 27th June : The Last 16!
It happened England were undone by a certain Mr Luis Saurez who is now serving a four month ban for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini and Ghana send home Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng for physical and verbal assaults respectively on their own coaching staff…..so not much controversy.
Lets not dwell on how bad England really were and even given the fact all they had to do was beat Costa Rica and at least give the travelling supporters, who spent a good part of a years salary to get to Brazil and pay the ticket prices, something to cheer about on their way home. But no that wasn’t even possible…..poor show by a bunch of over tattooed millionaires.
The only thing that made it remotely bearable is that Spain, Italy and Portugal all top seeds were sent packing into their world of endorsements and pomp.
No more Rooney, Ronaldo, Mario Balotelli and instead Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Belgium all qualified into the last sixteen along with two first timers ever to progress to that stage for the first time in Greece and the fantastic Algerian side, that were so emotionally charged after their draw with Russia, they literally were all partying on the pitch…Great Success!
Most passionate manager award this week goes to Mexico’s Benny The Ball lookalike : Miguel Herrera who showed more excitement and sheer happiness being jumped on by his celebrating players after their 3-1 victory over Croatia that many feared for his life! After a shoddy qualifying campaign he came in to save the day, now they look like serious contenders and they should give the Dutch some serious problems.
France qualified comfortably and another couple of wonder strikes for Argentinian hit-man Lionel Messi sees them top their group too.
Shout out for the USA as after narrowly failing to top the group with a last minute equaliser from Christiano Ronaldo, qualify in second place to you guessed it……….Ze Germans : )
Brazil take apart Cameroon but they haven’t really come up against a solid side like the Germans or Belgium so lets see if Neymar can keep them ahead of the pack.
Now every match is a cup final so we should see some great tussles and the first game between Brazil and Chile could see some sparks fly and what a way to kick off the last 16!!!!
