Newsletter January 23rd 2011

This newsletter is brought to you by MIKE SULLIVAN OF VOLKSWAGEN SANTA MONICA

Hi Breeps!

What an exciting week that was- Firstly, I went to see my new favorite British band 'Plan B' at The Troubadour, and spotted Sir Elton grooving along, seeming to love as much as we did, We also saw "Biographies in a bag" with the very talented Rachel Oglivy and Lynn Ferguson. This is an ongoing experiment, so will let you know when it happens again. Up next, Mr. Katy Perry aka Russell Brand at The Improv on Olympic, A very funny show indeed. Irreverent and borderline offensive. Mmmm! Wonder how Golden Globes would feel about him hosting next year over the mildly tame in comparison Ricky Gervais. Also my play opened last week, 'Me, As a Penguin' thanks to all that have attended so far, your support means a lot to me. We've also been hard at work on our website to bring you all the Brit news and info all in one place. We will let you know when it goes live and perhaps have a launch party so stay tuned for that.

It is really difficult to build up a credit score when you first move to the States. VW of Santa Monica have found a loop hole and have been helping so many BRITS IN LA get vehicles. If you need a car - to buy or Lease, Joe Seymour is the guy to talk to. For those of you on a visa, the Foreign Business Professionals Plan is probably your best option but speak to Joe, our guy at VW. He will handle all your questions and concerns. His direct number is 310 266-8825 or email him at You can even do the whole process over email and have a shiny new motor in a matter of days! Saves a lot of time when moving here. Bar Lubitsch
Wanna review your local British Pub? Thrillist recently did - but we want to hear what our Brits think of some of these places.

"When it comes to successful imports from across the pond, the comfy, friendly pub is right up there with shepherd's pie and Bono double-fisting pints of Guinness. But thankfully, you don't need any Euro holiday excuse to drink yourself green. So in honor of Wednesday, this week we're probing preeminent pubs pouring perfect pints... and then trying to say that sentence aloud after we've downed a few.

Susana R pulls up a stool at Joxer Daly'sOlde King's Head in Santa Monica: "If you think the British don't serve good food, they will definitely change your mind." For some real authenticity, Orsolya D throws a hand up for the resident Beatles cover band at The Britannia: Not "your typical 'Dad's after-work cover band!'" Oh thank God.

Maybe it's the beer goggles, but Angela O is head over heels for The Irish Times in Palms: "I'm in love with the place... and I also have a crush on all of the bartenders!" Meanwhile, Alicia O can't get enough of the curry and chips at The Auld Dubliner (washed down with a Guinness, naturally)! Massachusetts native Mark G knows a thing or two about drinking away his Seasonal Affective Disorder, so his thoughts on Sonny McLean's are quite the stamp of approval: "Just like being at home, but with less ugly people." We repeat: thank God.

Since you're probably gonna need some meat to soak up that booze, Dorothy R recommends Hudson House, where the pretzel burger and craft beer combo is an "awesomeness overload!" Follow Melissa W's wise words and don't be fooled by Waterloo & City's exterior; "it looks kind of like one of those sketchy townie places but when you walk in, it's so warm and inviting." And John H "thanks the beer gods" (Silenus?) for Congregation Ale House: "They have heard my offering and hearkened unto my call." To that we say amen... and bottoms up!"

I have my Immigration meeting on Feb 23rd, the day before the TOSCARS to become a bonified citizen of the United States. After nearly 12 years of living here, I thought it was time. British Immigration attorney Bernie Sidman is the lawyer I chose to file my paperwork and represent me. I have found him and his staff amazingly helpful and realistic (he is from Leeds!). So email Bernie if you want to know what your chances are of getting visas or greencards, etc.. It really does pays to have a lawyer to help.

The reviews are in and "Me, As A Penguin" is a hit. The most obvious asset this sweet, quirky play by Tom Wells offers is the chance for four actors to prove their skills. And prove them they do, under the direction of John Pleshette. But ponder a bit, and the play seems to say we can mend our mistakes, change our minds, request a Mulligan. Thomas Wolfe be damned, you can go home again.-Backstage. "actors are excellent...impeccable direction. Lots of laughs.” - Examiner Liz (played by Mina Badie) and Mark (played by Craig Robert Young) play a pleasant young couple who alternate between kooky, loving and bickering. Nicely rounding out the cast as comic “straight men”, they especially shine in a couple of touching scenes with Stitch. - LA Theatre review.
The Lost Studio Theatre. Set in Hull, written by Brit Playwright Tom Wells, also starring BLA member Jamie Donovan. (Runs just over an hour) more info and tickets here

The health care reform bill that President Obama signed states that starting in the month of September; preventative care screenings now have to be covered by health insurance companies. This is great news for health insurance policy holders. Many people had to pay out of pocket before for their preventative care screenings. This measure will help people catch potentially dangerous diseases and illnesses before they become life threatening.
Please click on here to see exactly what services are covered, or please contact Adam Beach for further details on 310 773 7939.
