Hi Breeps!

So LA's fifth season, (The Awards season) has finally come to an end and we can start getting on with Spring. Congratulations to the British Film 'The King's Speech' for sweeping up. I was fortunate enough to attend Elton John's Oscar Party at the Pacific Design Center to watch a live broadcast. The event was amazing, decked out all in Gold this year. We were seated with Lorraine Bracco and Taye Diggs, and right behind me was the one and only Katie Price (I'll stop there!) Anyway After the awards ended one of my favorite bands of the moment, Florence and the Machine performed a number of songs, Elton joined Florence for a duet of 'You Got The Love.' and 'Tiny Dancer' these were real crowd-pleasers.  The after party was in full swing and I got to hold an actual Gold member.
Yes, I'm drunk. But I'm happy. 'From Toscar to Oscar'
Thanks to Robert Stromberg, the winner of art Direction for 'Alice in Wonderland' for letting me steal his award for a moment. But alas I know have a new pic for my vision board. The event raised $4 million. So with Oscar on our my mind and the play 'Me, as a Penguin' coming to a close.
Brits in LA members L-R Shayne, Lorraine, Tanya, Martin, (me), Herb and Mark in attendance of my last show.

So, I thought this week would be a good time to answer a question I get a lot from those newcomers that are Actors.

Q. I want to give acting a go in Los Angeles, But where do I start?
a) Come out and visit several times, make sure LA is for you. So many actors sell up, come out, and leave everything behind in the hopes that they are going to get noticed on the streets in Beverly Hills. The truth is so many land here and  they struggle, they can't get around, they don't know where to meet agents or managers. they can't get a proper job. They live in the wrong neighborhood. All this can be resolved by making several visits.
b)First of make sure you have the right papers. Moving here on a tourist visa is the wrong way to do it, speak to one of recommended lawyers below to find out realistically the likelihood of you getting an 01-visa. (don't audition on a tourist visa - (So many studios require their casting directors to make sure actors have the right work visas - There's nothing worse for you than booking a job, to later be told you can't do it - It not only upsets you, but the casting director too. (don't waste time)
c)Look around and perhaps ask people at Breakfast club, where's the best area to stay in. rent, buy before hand? so many stories of people paying cheap rent but they are staying in Long Beach with no car. Trust me it's all about Location. Things are very spread out here.
d)Plan ahead, ask your agent in London to set up meetings for you from London with agents and managers here. Much easier than getting here and shooting from the hip. Make sure every day you are taking meetings, pushing forward. Don't waste your time.
e) Have a strong demo reel - hard copy and online
f)  Head shots, these are your calling cards to getting in the room - Head shots tend to be a little different in LA. It's best to get someone here to take them. Ask to see the photographer's book or website before signing on.
g) Get in a good class (be as prepared as you can be)
h) Dialect lessons - You may think you have a good American accent. But from where? Wisconsin? New York? The south? Don't bluff it - There are some great dialect coaches here. May cost a bit. but it's worth it, trust me. see a recommendation of mine below.
i) Save up your money -on an 01 visa all you can do is act - No bartending, waiting tables to see you through. - You need a green card or an American Passport for that.
j) Rent a car- Public transport in LA is not as good as London and the Metro (tube) only goes so far.

That's all I can think of now if you have any further questions email me at - I've listed some tried and tested folk below - So check out there work!

Lat week I also had my interview to become an American Citizen. The fantastically British Immigration Lawyer Bernie Sidman (see below) The nervous experience was sweetened by having Bernie there with me, I must admit. The health care reform bill that President Obama signed states that starting in the month of September; preventative care screenings now have to be covered by health insurance companies. This is great news for health insurance policy holders. Many people had to pay out of pocket before for their preventative care screenings. This measure will help people catch potentially dangerous diseases and illnesses before they become life threatening.
