Steve Sidelnyk's Football Blog 24th January 2014!!!

Woooooooooaaaaaaaahhhhhhh just witnessed the most bizarre penalty shoot out between Manchester United and Sunderland in the semi-final of the Capitol One League Cup and as the BBC puts it a slapstick affair with no less than SIX professional footballers having their efforts either saved or blasting wide or over the bar and Sunderland eventually triumphing 2-1!!! I know people get nerves and pressure mounts but thats just the most surreal end to a game I've ever seen.
OK its either the famous Gareth Southgate miss against the Germans or indeed Crystal Palace's Jason Puncheon's comedic penalty attempt against Tottenham Hotspurs but for SIX players to miss in one shoot out!!!!!! AMAZEBALLS!!!!!!!!!!
The pressure mounts for David Moyes the Man Utd boss and his tactics and selection criticized by everyone from the genuine pundits to TalkSport listeners just baying for his resignation.
Chelsea and more to the point Samuel Eto dismantled them at the weekend and as I've said before NO team is scared of the Red Devils anymore and Jose Mourihno diplomatically said that they had no chance of regaining the Premiership crown this
year and to be honest a top four finish and no Champions League could be the final nail in the coffin for the most stressed out looking man in football. But with todays acquisition of Juan Mata from Chelsea he's looking to beef up the midfield and an injury list including Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and a suspended Vidic it was a very tame looking Man Utd team that needs to shape up pretty quickly or risk spiraling down the domestic table.....The Special One even sold Mata to the Reds after being refused any offer Chelsea put in for Rooney last summer.....he's a wise old fox : O )
Man City though managed to beat West Ham 3-0 and after a thrashing at The Etihad Stadium and an aggregate score of 9-0 to City, it means they meet Sunderland in the Capitol One Cup Final on March 2nd with The Black Cats manager Gus Poyet sending out a message of an impending triumph for them, an optimistic outlook but remember what they did to Leeds United in 1973 in the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium when an in-form Leeds side were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland!!!!!!
Back to the Premiership now and all the top clubs winning apart from Liverpool and Everton both drawing, Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea all winning too along with Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Tottenham which leaves The Gunners still at the top with Chelsea and Manchester City hot on their heels and Jose Mourihno still denying that they have any chance of the title.
To be honest from Aston Villa in 10th place all the way down to Cardiff in bottom place there are only 6 points separating those two clubs with Hull, Norwich, West Brom, Stoke, Swansea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, West Ham AND Sunderland all within 2 games of either escaping or entering the drop zone. If a team has a run of form then its all change again. Arsenal top, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton, Man United in seventh place and 6 points off Champions League, Newcastle and Southampton all the way to Villa but Southampton on 31 points and Villa 24 so a bit of a rift developing!

FA Cup this weekend and hopefully some more transfer news next week!

  1. Could Sunderland do a 'Wigan' this year?? (as in 2013) - beat Man City in the FA Cup final AND get relegated???? Can't wait!!
