MEET A MEMBER - SASHA GARY

Meet Sasha Gary, Half a Brit, twice the wit, from New Jersey, who moved to LA 17 years ago to pursue acting.

Was there a particular reason you chose LA?
Growing up, I flew back and forth to Liverpool, England to spend time with family, my mum is from Childwall. I chose LA because of the entertainment industry. I came here to finish University by interning on a sitcom for my last two credits. After that, I never left.

What do you miss most from home? I miss both Liverpool, and New Jersey in each unique way! It comes down to being with family, and people you love the most. I love the humor of Liverpool, I love the people, I love being able to travel from the UK to other countries conveniently. I was very lucky to have to travelled back and forth to Liverpool growing up, as I was able to travel young, spend time with family, and being in the UK.

What was your first impression of LA and has it changed since? I thought there was a great deal of opportunity here to pursue my dreams, and over the years it has changed due to the economy crashing, the entertainment industry shifting, and getting more expensive in the years I have lived here. I feel like there was more opportunity back then, and it's harder to find that same opportunity now, but not impossible.

What do you find the biggest difference is  living here versus Liverpool/New Jersey?
The history of Liverpool and being able to travel to NY and Philadelphia. Both places have history behind them, where Los Angeles has it's beach culture but not much else. I love the beauty of countryside in the UK, castles, and the history of Philadelphia being the oldest city in America. It contributes to the depth of the people, as well. Here it seems your only as good as you can help someone, where in the UK and New Jersey it's more about who you are as a person. There is a realness missing here in LA. I guess that's why I travel out of here during my time off!

Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
I love driving to Malibu for lunch. When I feel like a long drive, I go to the County Line, beginning of Ventura, to Neptune's Net.
Visit Neptune's Net on Facebook

I have one cold beer, and excellent fish and chips. It's a great people watching melting pot of motorcycle riders, surfers, and families.

What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here?
Where ever you decide to move, find a neighborhood area that you can walk to easily, as you will find comfort in not getting in your car all the time. Plus, a great local bar you can meet new people. Make the effort to travel to the desert, San Diego and Northern California. There is a lot you can do here.

Lots of our members join our group Brits in LA seeking out words of wisdom - what is the best piece of advice you've been given?
From my very first acting teacher, handed me this on a piece of paper "Persistence.. Press on. Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not: Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of uneducated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent" Calvin Coolidge
I have lived by these words!

Lastly, how can we find out more about you? Are you working on anything at the moment?
My next show I am co-starring in, is Oishi Demon Hunter coming in June.
