Hi Breeps
Now Wimbledon is over, seems the Brits in LA are getting in the brood for the imminent arrival of the new royal sprog! Member Jean Karasak, who owns one of our favourite British stores in Tarzana. Oh Fancy That! - is running a competition to guess the day the baby will be born and what Will’s and Kate will name him/her. My money is on July 22 and her name will be Alexandra. There’s a nice gift basket of British goods at stake, so here’s hoping I win.
Speaking of the bump, we will be hosting a summer fete in celebration
Sunday July 28th 3-6pm at The Palihouse West Hollywood, with food, drink and some great games. Tickets are now available for purchase here We also have some Great British music talent joining us too. as always our events sell out fast. So don't hang about. Thanks to member Ben Stanley for the awesome artwork.
I also went to see the premier of the stage show “Miserable Lesbians’ written, directed and starring Sandro Monetti. The cast was made up of Brits in LA members,
Laura-Beth Hill, Nadia Witt, Kerstin Alm, Anthony Weymess and Katie Amess.
All I can say is this production is absolutely Bonkers! and those of you all will know what I mean by that. - It reminded me of those sex-capade shows, the British comedian, Jim Davidson would put on with titles such as “Sinderella” and “Goldibox” with a touch of Benny Hill. Need I say more? Overflowing with double-entendres, terrible singers and OTT performances (purposefully) I imagine they will go down a storm in Edinburgh next month. Break legs guys! This segways me nicely into the film festival
Outfest, the 31st Annual LGBT in Los Angeles. I attending many of the screenings this past weekend, some good, some better than others. A few stand outs for me was an Israeli movie called “Out In The dark”
A powerful story, that is shot beautifully with an amazing score. Nimr (Nicholas Jacob), a handsome Palestinian psychology student, is in the closet at home. But while in Tel Aviv taking a class he meets Roy (Michael Aloni), a dashing Israeli attorney, and quickly falls in love. But Israeli security strips Nimr of his visa, trying to blackmail him into becoming an informant, and when his brother finds out he’s gay, Nimr is thrown out of his family home. Nimr and Roy are left to fight desperately against ruthless enemies for the chance to be together. But my favourite so far has been a documentary called ‘Bridegroom’ a harrowing but inspirational love story directed by Linda Bloodworth Thomason (“Designing Women”)
Who navigates the romantic highs of Tom and Shane’s relationship – until tragedy strikes. Immediately after, Tom’s conservative parents block Shane off from all contact, refusing to let Shane attend Tom’s funeral. But instead of conceding, Shane vows to tell his and Tom’s love story to the world. First on Youtube, his video “It Could Happen to You” attracted 3.4 million views.
Now, as a remarkable, heartfelt feature about love, loss and the courage to stand up for same-sex equality, Shane’s story has taken the nation by storm. I feel strongly that this film should be seen by the masses, a true tale of love, no matter what the gender and why equality is important to all of us. It’s still going on so for anyone that is interested in LGBT film head to www.outfest.org to see what’s playing.
I also got back into training realizing I’d put on some extra pounds during my recent vacation, and one of the perks about living in LA is that you can hire a personal trainer to come to your house and give you a great workout in and outside of your home. body your design are brilliant - JC, a former British martial arts/ boxer is brilliant, he has a great bedside manner but knows just how far to push you. email him for schedule and rates mailto:bodyyourdesign@gmail.com and mention brits in la for a discounted rate for your first 10 sessions.
That’s about it for this week. Look forward to seeing you at the wetting of the Royal Baby Alexandra’s head event next Sunday. (fingers crossed I win ;-))
Cheers
Craig

Meet Christine Peake from Bury, Lancs/London who moved to LA 18 years ago is the CEO/Founder peakPRgroup in Santa Monica. Representing clients such as smartwater, coca-cola, ONEHOPE wine, Oxylent Vitamins, Face Forward charity, American Red Cross and peakPRgroup specialise in A-list red carpet events working with great organisations such as BAFTA/LA. Christine also writes columns in LA, she is the LA Charity Examiner and writes for the Santa Monica Observer and CNN.
Christine lives in Santa Monica with her 14 year old son Oliver.
Was there a particular reason you chose LA ?
Not really, I actually preferred NYC, but personal reasons brought me here, and the longer I stayed the more settled I became and the more I appreciated what it had to offer. A lot of people criticize LA yet they stay, so I embraced it and adapted to the lifestyle, made some great friends and buckled down. Every time I drove down my street and saw the PCH Malibu coastline I had an instant reminder of how lucky I was, certainly better than a grey day in the rain.
What one thing do you miss from home?
Hands down, the sense of humour. Here I adapted the phrase "just kidding" to almost every sentence as not to offend some Americans..
What do you find the biggest difference is living here versus the UK?
Physically there seems to be an obvious lack of wrinkles here and everyone's breasts are pert? Dinner reservations are over at 9pm and kids drive terribly!
Mentally, I love the energy, determination and basically the "you can do anything attitude". An ex glamour model would have to fight harder to change a career in the UK, whereas here, anything is possible, for example, Piers Morgan, who'd have thought it? I used to work at the same newspaper as Piers in the UK, now he really is living the dream. Americans believe in the American Dream, I never heard the Lancashire Lass Dream when I was growing up although black pudding was dreamy to me..
Do you have a hidden gem in LA that you want to share with us?
I get very stressed out with work and the number of hours I put in, plus the events on the weekend peakPRgroup are associated with, so when I need to take some time out, I go to TIKKUN HOLISTIC SPA in Santa Monica on 4th St, best facial, massage, body scrub ever, I feel like I have slept for a week when I leave. Plus the infra red room burns 300 calories in 30 mins, so the gym can be avoided. It is also around the corner from Ye Olde King's Head, so naturally I feel the urge to gain back the 300 calories, did I say 300?
What would you suggest to others who are thinking about making the move here ?
Don't order alcohol at lunchtime, just kidding, actually I am not. (see I said just kidding)
I would say "give it time," Americans speak the same language as Brits although they spell it differently, but the culture is totally different, rather than criticise it, embrace it, work hard, avoid wearing Union Jack Tee shirts on the 4th of July is always a good start! BBC America will save your life, HP sauce is available and Brits In La, are a must to give you that extra help, guidance and extended friendship.
We have an extra special pub crawl coming up in August in tandem with the movie release of 'The World's End' - check out the trailer below.

Now Playing – August 18, 2013
A time-twisting funhouse from the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning author of Clybourne Park and the Tony Award®-winning director of August: Osage County.
Past, present and future collide for Bee, when strange new revelations rock her seemingly normal suburban life, taking us down the rabbit hole on a wildly unforgettable ride full of hairpin plot turns, riotously shifting realities and havoc-wreaking time travel.
This bold new play will make you laugh, gasp and wonder how much control we truly have over our lives.
Masterful storyteller Norris follows up his monster Taper hit Clybourne Park with a mind-scrambling comedy that gleefully distorts our perspective while posing profound questions about the choices we make.
“It makes your head spin in all the right ways.”

BRITS ON THE STAGE
Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Sunset Boulevard" From Musical Theatre West
Hollywood noir meets Broadway razzle-dazzle in Sunset Boulevard, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical adaptation of Billy Wilder's classic film. Complemented by one of Webber's most radiant scores, Sunset Boulevard is every bit as enthralling, dark and delicious as the original black-and-white masterpiece. Sidelined by the introduction of "talkies," silent movie star Norma Desmond longs for a return to the big screen. Her neediness and cunning provide the perfect trap for down-and-out screenwriter Joe Gillis who wanders into her decaying mansion looking for a quick buck ... and gets much more in return.
